BBH Video Blog #4 – How I Saved the Family Bed

9 Comments 15 August 2010

Eric has been sleeping on the couch for a while now due to my bed-sharing and night nursing Ella. We’ve missed each other. So I found a way to save the family bed!

    I love it! Very creative!
My son Gabriel (3.5) and I co-slept until a couple of months ago and poor hubby was in the guest room. Wish we’d had room for this!
We recently moved Gabriel to his ‘big boy’ bed (=full size), which he was very excited about. But he still needs mommy to nurse him to sleep. So I crawl in bed with him when he needs me, then move back in bed with hubby. Wish we’d done this sooner!

awesome! i’ve seen similar pics before, and it seems like a FANTASTIC solution to the problem. we have 2 boys, who OFTEN come sleep with us, but both of them are mini-furnaces (like their daddy), so when in bed with us, they don’t sleep well, and we don’t sleep well, because everyone is too hot, and thrashing everywhere. i actually suggested to my dh a couple of nights ago about getting another queen mattress in our room so that we don’t have that issue… ’cause i certainly hate having to get out of bed in the middle of the night (not for nursing at the moment, more for nightmares – co-sleeping is soooooo much easier, more comfy, more natural, less disruptive (to EVERYONE), and we have bubba #3 on the way…. something to think about as a solution to a common problem! thanks bunches! :)

I was wondering, what did ou us to bring Ella’s crib mattress up to the same hight as your mattress. We have our mattress and boxspring on the floor and i’d like to use your idea…how do i get babies mattrress to the same hight??

Hey Brooke – I found some boxes (we just moved) that were exactly the same height and placed them under the mattress. Oddly enough, it made her mattress the same height as ours! Another way to ensure this, and my original idea before the boxes, would be to measure the height of your bed and make a little stand with 2x4s and plywood. Best of luck! :)

  4. Thanks for sharing Kaitlin! It’s great to see how different families co-sleep, bed-share etc. Looks like you’ve found a great solution to your problem!

We did it! After reading your blog, I loved your idea! I showed my husband and he immediately started searching for what we could put the crib mattress on. We ended up going to Home Depot and buying 3 moving boxes that fit perfectly under the mattress to make it the same level as our bed. My problem was not that my husband wasn’t sleeping with us (he was sleeping the best out of all of us!) but that I couldn’t get enough sleep with my 6 month old in bed with me. I love having her near me and night nursing, but for 6 months I couldn’t get comfortable sleeping and couldn’t stretch out. The last month was the worst since she started wiggling in her sleep and moving all around– I wasn’t getting any sleep! This is the perfect solution and it has been working great since we did it! I wanted to post a pic of our bed for you, but I don’t know how to do it on your site. So, anyways– thanks for sharing!
